About the #twitterapi IRC room
gotwalt: so other than the odd humor in watching questions addressed to twitter staff go unanswered and the occasional noob rant about oauth being hard, why does anyone lurk here?
gotwalt: (perhaps the odd humor of watching questions addressed to the room go unanswered...)
dacort: That's, uh. About it for me. If I were in less channels, I wouldn't be nearly as awesome on IRC...
jadd_ left the chat room. (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
gotwalt: i'm also a big fan of the connection timeouts
[3: 55pm] dfr|mac joined the chat room.
[3: 56pm] speechles joined the chat room.
gotwalt: no - i think it's interesting that we (and twitter) talk about the developer community...but in practice, the places that you'd expect to see community (with the possible exception of the super-noisy email dev list) are largely silent
gotwalt: i wonder if there's more we as devs can do to foster, uh, community around building cool stuff here
dacort: It's really confusing to me - I was blown away by how many people were at Chirp.
gotwalt: is it that everyone's service overlaps in one way or another, and competitive forces keep everyone quiet?
dacort: But yea, other (normal) channels are just really ... dry.
gotwalt: i mean, on average, when twitter goes down hard, nobody even talks about it in real time here
gotwalt: as if there's some strategic advantage to pretending that the problem doesn't affect your service
dacort: hehe
dacort: I mean, it could just be the generally unhelpful nature of Twitter, inc. And only a few other dev's pitch in and *help* (as opposed to complaining).
Prince_MARTH left the chat room. (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
dacort: But yea...75 people in here, and nobody else has piped up yet? ...
gotwalt: though it might sound like i'm patronizing the @overlords, i understand at least sympathetically from first-hand perspective just how overloaded they are, even in the midst of big staff-up
dacort: *nod* Certainly.
gotwalt: so while i can also say from first hand experience that there's a lot they can do better
gotwalt: i wonder what we as the dev community can do better on our own
[4: 03pm] Prince_MARTH joined the chat room.
dacort: I try to be helpful if I can when somebody pops in here, but not sure that's enough.
gotwalt: i've lurked, but i can only take so many of "my oauth is broken i wrote a php file for it" kind of questions
mtrainer left the chat room. (Quit: mtrainer)
dacort: *nod* Not sure if you saw the person that was in here the other night, but all he wanted to do was a little blog plugin that posted to twitter and oauth was far too complex for what should have been a little one-liner.
gotwalt: right, but then there are plenty of people like you and me
[4: 05pm] mtrainer joined the chat room.
gotwalt: doing, uh, professional work on this platform
dacort: Who are probably all just as busy working and really don't encounter questions much.
gotwalt: yeah, perhaps that's it
[4: 05pm] tnm joined the chat room.
gotwalt: if you understand it, maybe you don't need a community
epeus left the chat room. (Quit: The computer fell asleep)
gotwalt: i mean, i'm of little help either - it's not like i ever answer anyone about stuff on the list
dacort: I very rarely post on the mailing list.
gotwalt: i unsubscribed a long time ago - the s/n (introduce yourself!) ratio is too bad
dacort: heh
[4: 07pm] tnm left the chat room. (Client Quit)
gotwalt: whoever came up with that thread idea should be put in timeout
gotwalt: i don't know. anyway, i'm interested in participating in something more proactive than just merely complaining about things, if anyone has any ideas.
[4: 10pm] • dacort watches the crickets go by.
gotwalt: yeah, wtf
dacort: Yea, not sure what the best approach is.
gotwalt: maybe a google wave
[4: 11pm] • gotwalt ducks
dacort: haha
